Terms of use

This page explains what happens to the text you write in The Footnote Familiar. It is a draft and will be finalised before the app goes live.

Who can see your notes

Your notes are private unless you choose to share them with a DM or linked players. The app has no feature that lets the admin read your campaigns. The person who manages the server can technically access the stored data; the app does not use end-to-end encryption.

Processing by an AI provider

When you choose to process notes, the text of those notes, together with the relevant parts of your log, is sent to the AI provider used by the app (Anthropic, maker of Claude). Only data from the campaign you are processing is sent. Your notes are never used to process anyone else's campaign.

Retention by the AI provider

According to Anthropic's terms (checked on 2 November 2026), text sent through its API is deleted automatically within 30 days. Text that Anthropic's safety systems flag as a possible breach of its usage policy may be kept for up to 2 years. Anthropic does not use text sent through its commercial API to train its models. The app itself keeps your notes until you delete them; backups are encrypted and kept for at most 6 months.

Your data is yours

You can export your campaigns to Markdown and JSON, and delete your account at any time. Deleting removes your data from the app, including from shared views of other players.
